The TT class were indeed the most peculiar and non-standard type of London Transport bus. They numbered five in all TT1-5, registered 526 - 530 FJJ and carried Strachans FH33/0F body work. The lower deck space, fitted out with racks was of course for transporting up to 23 bicycles through the Dartford Tunnel and the large rear space was intended for tandems and tricycles. All five entered service around November 1963 and were operated from London Transport's Country area Dartford Garage on behalf of the Dartford Tunnel Authority (who had actually purchased them). They were all withdrawn and sold in 1966 to dealer Don Everall of Wolverhampton. - go to
www.countrybus.org/TT/TT.htm and you'll find quite a bit of info. Everall's sold TT4 (529 FJJ) on to Shrewsbury Corporation and it was from a scrapyard in Shrewsbury that the bus was originally purchased for preservation by a chap called Leon Daniels. The last record for the bus dates from 2008 when it appears that restoration had still not started. I do recall seeing a couple of these in service as there were specially provided areas at each end of the tunnels - this was pre- Dartford Crossing - where they loaded from purpose built platforms. I have a feeling that the loading area at the end of one of the current Northbound Tunnels was still there when I looked a couple of years ago.
